It seems the cartel boss is being rescued and the Byrdes' plans are once again about to fall apart, but it's not that simple. The guard then cocks a gun, drawing Navarro's attention, and the boss realizes his gun is empty of bullets and he's going to be killed. Navarro is transferred from his prison, and on the way, one of the guards kills the other and gives the cartel boss a gun, urging him to run. The gun the guard gave him is empty – it was all part of a plan to stage the scene to look like a prisoner attempting to escape. Believing Camila was responsible for the attempt on his life, Navarro gives Marty the number of a Chicago hitman to call to come “take care of” her.
By now, you know how Marty and Wendy work; they’re going to go with the most logical choice. The Byrdes aligned themselves with Camila instead of Omar, making her the new head of the Navarro cartel. Linney’s sardonic Wendy continues to manage the Byrde’s illegal activities while trying to gain political legitimacy.

Ruth finally screams at her. These end up being the famous last words from our favorite sailor-mouthed character, as a bullet pummels her in the chest, staining her perfect white dress deep red. Just when it looks like he's actually going to escape (a guard hands him a gun and tells him there's a plane up the road), it's all revealed to be a set up.

Darlene walked into the kitchen, and reappeared with a loaded shotgun and killed Frank before he even had a chance to react. It wasn’t a huge surprise to fans, though obviously Frank Sr. never saw it coming. Roy Petty was the first FBI agent charged with tracking the Byrde family as they carried out money laundering for the Navarro drug cartel. Petty sought to expose Marty and family's criminal activities, and resorted to whatever lengths it took in an effort to make that happen. As FBI characters later lament in Ozark, some of what he accomplished as head of the operation was outweighed by the numerous illegal activities he committed to achieve them. After some trouble with the heroin-dealing Snell family, Del was brought to a negotiation that Marty believed would be mutually beneficial for both sides.
She agrees, despite learning Navarro wasn't the one who killed her son. Ahead of the finale being released, Jason Bateman teased it was kinda a "happy ending" but the Byrde family come out of it "limping". Corruption, wealth and power - which the Byrde family comes to represent - clearly wins in the end and the family are united. It’s right that Wendy should be the one to shut him down, with Linney’s signature prim delivery.
She threatens Clare Shaw (Katrina Lenk), along with Marty and Wendy Byrde, and gathers them all in the pharmaceutical boss's office. There, she holds them at gunpoint until Wendy calls Javi (she later reasons to Marty that it was inevitable anyway). Wendy lures Javi over, and when he arrives, Ruth immediately shoots him and kills him. "Del" was the Byrde family's first handler when Marty first proposed the move to the Ozarks. He ultimately worked towards the interests of the Navarro cartel, and wasn't too concerned about doing whatever it took to ensure Marty delivered on his promise to launder drug money.
We never get inside their heads as a plethora of life-or-death incidents continually swirl around them. “Ozark” has always been an “almost” for me — extremely watchable and dotted with compelling performances (by Laura Linney, Julia Garner, and Lisa Emery as Darlene) but not deep or emotionally engaging. During a supposed prison transfer, Omar is driven in the back of an FBI van by two men in police uniforms. The driver pulls over, saying he needs to urinate, but ends up walking over to the passenger side and shooting the other cop. He opens the door for Omar and hands him a gun, telling the mob boss a car a half-mile away will take him to a plane. Marty climbs out first, along with Jonah and then Charlotte, but Wendy is unresponsive. Chastened by this revelation, the kids go to visit their mother at the mental facility. They share a touching exchange, in which Wendy admits it’s her fault, not Ruth’s, that Ben is dead.
At the Missouri Belle’s fundraising event, she learned the full truth. Pharmaceutical CEO Clare Shaw (Katrina Lenk) told Camila that Ruth was the one who murdered Javi. That’s when the real betrayal of this show unfolded. Basically, helping Omar meant breaking him out of jail, getting him off a federal list he deserved to be on, committing U.S. voter fraud, and aligning with an unpredictable man who actively hated them. But Omar’s sister Camila (Veronica Falcón) came with far fewer strings attached.
The Byrdes tried to protect Ben as best they could from the murderous Helen, but Wendy inevitably gave up his location to Helen's hitman Nelson when she realized he could endanger the entire family. Jacob Snell ended up dying by Darlene's hand when his wife poisoned him with ground up cherry pits in his coffee. It was one of Ozark's most surprising deaths, made all the more surprising that the two still seemed very much in love and understanding of each other even after Jacob learned what Darlene had done. When Ruth proved unreliable in her efforts to get Marty Byrde's cash location, Russ and Boyd decide to go over to the Blue Cat lodge and kill Marty and skip town. Ruth ends up turning on her uncles and, in a character-defining moment, rigged a dock to electrocute both men when they arrived at the Blue Cat Lodge. After scrabbling around in the dirt for most of season 4, they have all of the money and donors they need to fuel their grand plans.
